Relax and unwind as you sail south to Lisbon, Portugal’s historic capital located on the River Tagus. Explore the classical buildings, the grand monuments that reflect the Age of Discovery, and the bustling medieval Alfama district. Enjoy life aboard Marco Polo as you head into the Atlantic and across to the Azores. Call first at delightful and cosmopolitan Horta on the ‘blue island’ of Faial, so named because of its profusion of hydrangeas. Explore this centuries old refuge for passing sailors or opt to discover the enormous Caldeira crater. From Praia da Vitória, on Terceira Island, take an optional excursion to see the island’s spectacular grottoes or visit Angra de Heroism, the historical capital. The ‘green island’ of São Miguel is a panorama of rolling hills, green plains and placid lakes including the spectacular Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake). The island’s capital, Ponta Delgada, has many churches, trim white houses, black and white tiled pavements and attractive squares. In Madeira, stroll around the charming old town of Funchal, try some Madeira wine, or take the cable car up to Monte for stunning views. Your final call is Leixoes, for optional excursions to Oporto where you may choose to visit the alluring medieval Ribeira district or a traditional Port wine lodge.
