Capture dramatic Scottish scenery and diverse culture

For ancient history buffs, for those interested in Norse and Gaelic culture, and for anyone who loves wild scenery, this short Highlands and Islands cruise aboard Marco Polo is a unique cruise itinerary.  Scotland’s dramatic coastline and remote islands present some truly spectacular scenery plus you will call in to some charming old port towns with picturesque harbours, fascinating folklore, historic architecture and a tempting range of local crafts and cuisine.

Sailing from Newcastle your first call is made at Kirkwall, capital of the Orkney archipelago, which is dominated by its medieval cathedral dedicated to St. Magnus, Here is the chance to visit the beautifully restored Stone Age village of Skara Brae, the formal naval base at Scapa Flow, where HMS Royal Oak sunk in World War II, and the famous Churchill Barriers. On the Isle of Lewis in the beautiful Outer Hebrides, Stornoway was originally a Viking settlement. Today it is home to a busy harbour, a fishing fleet and the Lewis Loom Centre. Optional excursions will reveal the prehistoric standing stones at Callanish, white sand beaches, rolling peat moors, and majestic cliffs and mountains. Fort William is set in a mountainous area of great natural beauty at the southern end of the Great Glen, overlooked by mighty Ben Nevis. Take in the glorious panoramas as Marco Polo sails up Loch Linnhe with its granite heights, lush woodlands and green slopes before exploring this friendly town or discovering the beautiful valley of Glen Nevis. A final day is spent cruising off the Scottish coast and relaxing on board before arriving in Leith.
