Charming Honfleur, on the Seine estuary, with its cobbled streets and picturesque old harbour is a wonderful introduction to French life and offers excursion choices to fashionable Deauville or to Claude Monet’s house and garden at Giverny. At the foot of the Basque mountain, St Jean de Luz, with its busy fishing port, narrow streets and centuries old homes, is your gateway to the city of Bayonne. Here, shopping streets cluster around the twin-spired cathedral, and cafés serve hot chocolate, a Breton speciality. On Good Friday, Le Verdon-sur-Mer offers an excursion opportunity to Bordeaux, famous for its superior wines, where the new spacious squares contrast with the city’s old quarter of narrow, crooked streets and wooden structures.
Brest in Brittany has a rich maritime history. The 15th century Château offers a panoramic view of the city and houses a naval museum full of nautical instruments and maritime paintings, and there’s a delicious choice of Breton crêperies and restaurants to sample. The pretty little town of St. Peter Port on Guernsey with its hill-side lanes and gardens is a delightful place to spend Easter Sunday. Take an optional island tour and discover Guernsey’s beautiful scenery. A final day to relax sailing back to Tilbury.
Note: Shops may be closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
