Known throughout the world for its awe-inspiring beauty, Norway’s fjordland is simply spectacular. During this amazing voyage Discovery cruises Geirangerfjord, often considered the most beautiful of all the fjords, and the mighty Sognefjord. You’ll sail between the numerous islands, islets and skerries that stud Norway’s coastline to call at the attractive cities of Ålesund and Bergen. Visits to the Shetland Isles and enchanting Tobermory complete this fantastic cruise.

After a leisurely day at sea you’ll awake far north of the border in the Shetland Isles. From Lerwick optional tours highlight the incredible open landscapes of this remote archipelago. Built on several islands surrounded by the Sunnmøre Alps, Ålesund is renowned for its distinctive art-nouveau architecture. Wander through winding streets lined with striking buildings displaying amazing turrets, towers and elaborate ornamentation often associated with Norse mythology. In the midst of the beautiful Romsdal Alps, Åndalsnes is at the heart of a wonderful mountain kingdom. Discovery then cruises the deep emerald green waters of Geirangerfjord. Steep, lush and rocky walls, endless waterfalls and snow-capped peaks are all part of the kaleidscope of images until you reach Hellesylt where optional tours take you into the heart of dramatic Norwegian nature. One of the world’s most beautiful railway journeys starts in Flåm, which nestles at the innermost reaches of Sognefjord. The chance to step aboard and ride through the wild, steep-sided Flåm Valley is not to be missed. Charming Bergen is a delight and small shops in the atmospheric Bryggen area sell traditional souvenirs. A call in the picture-postcard Scottish town of Tobermory is a wonderful finale to your cruise.

	Originally settled by the Norsemen in the 9th century, Lerwick was founded as an unofficial marketplace to service 17th century Dutch herring fleets. The core of the town is a maze of narrow, flagstone streets set behind 18th century sandstone buildings overlooking the busy harbour. Hay’s Dock, once the centre of Shetland’s fishing and boat building industries, is home to the marvellous Shetland Museum and Archives. On the southern tip of Mainland the extraordinary archaeological site of Jarlshof tells the story of some 4,000 years of human history on this remote archipelago with a wealth of wildlife.

	In 1904 a catastrophic fire swept through Ålesund leaving the town in ashes. It was rebuilt in the then fashionable art nouveau style. Buildings with turrets and towers and facades with medieval romantic ornamentation add a quirky charm to the town that is considered the most beautiful in Norway. From the park 418 steps lead to the summit of Mount Aksla, which affords wonderful views of Ålesund, built on islands stretching into the sea. In an elaborate building that was the former Swan Pharmacy, the Jugendstilsenteret celebrates the town’s unique architectural history.

	Åndalsnes lies at the end of the 88-kilometre long Romsdalfjord at the mouth of the River Rauma. The river, which flows through the Romsdal Valley, was one of the first rivers in Norway to attract British aristocrats and other fly fishing foreigners at the end of the 19th century. The small town is today the administrative centre of Rauma in Norway’s Møre and Romsdal district. Optional excursions feature the beautiful Romsdal Alps with the famous Troll Wall and spectacular winding Troll Path Road. Åndalsnes is also the start of the incredible Rauma Line, a vintage steam train journey through enthralling mountain scenery.

	Lying at the head of the Sunnylvsfjorden, Hellesylt is a tiny village with Viking roots and a colourful history entwined with tourism. Its first hotel was built in 1875 since when Hellesylt has received both royal guests and cultural celebrities including Henrik Ibsen whose drama Brand was inspired by the spectacular surroundings. A crashing waterfall surges through the centre of Hellesylt effectively dividing in two the village that is a gateway to the exceptionally beautiful landscapes of Geirangerfjord. 	Surrounded by towering mountains the tiny village of Flåm, with some 500 inhabitants, nestles at the head of Aurlandsfjord, the innermost arm of the mighty Sognefjord. Its popularity as a tourist destination began in the late 19th century with the arrival of steamships carrying English and German passengers including Europe’s royals attracted by the salmon fishing in the Flåm River. Today’s visitors are drawn to Flåm for a chance to ride on one of the world’s steepest and most spectacular railways. A masterpiece of engineering, Flåm Railway twists and turns through the steep-sided Flåm Valley amidst some of Norway’s most breathtaking mountain scenery.

	Known as the ‘Gateway to the Fjords’, Bergen is Norway’s second largest city. Yet with a population of less than a quarter of a million, it has the feel of a small town. It is beautifully sited against a backdrop of seven mountains and the funicular ride to the summit of Mount Fløien affords wonderful panoramic views of Bergen and Norway’s attractive coastline. Overlooking the harbour the colourful Bryggen wharf is the face of Bergen. The characteristic wooden gabled buildings were once the home and offices of Hanseatic merchants but today house shops selling crafts and traditional souvenirs.

	Established in the late 18th century as a fishing port, Tobermory is one of the prettiest ports in Scotland. The picture-postcard village has a large natural harbour where colourful boats bob on the waves watched over by a rainbow of brightly, painted buildings backed by woodland-fringed hills. Tobermory is the capital of the Isle of Mull. Mull is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides and its diverse landscape ranges from high mountain and wild moorland, to wave-lashed sea cliffs and sandy beaches. Neighbouring Iona is the tiny island where St Columba first brought Christianity to Scotland in 563 AD.
