A voyage of commemoration

Join us on this special cruise commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on D-Day as the Allies launched their campaign to liberate Western Europe. Codenamed ‘Operation Overlord’, the event on 6th June 1944 was to change the course of history. Remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and visit some of the places associated with a conflict whose astounding success was to go down in military history.

After a leisurely day at sea you’ll awake in the picturesque town of Honfleur. From here you might choose to visit Pegasus Bridge, captured by the men of the 6th British Airborne division led by Major John Howard. The missions for the ‘Red Berets’ on 6th June 1944 are presented in the fascinating Pegasus Bridge Museum. With its bustling waterfront of grey and white stone buildings interrupted by colourfully painted houses, charming St. Peter Port is the capital of Guernsey. Venture further and discover the beautiful island, which lies close to the French coast. Fortifications, an underground military hospital and the Occupation Museum feature in an optional tour exploring the island’s Second World War history. Occupied by the Germans, Guernsey was finally liberated some eleven months after the Normandy Landings. A final call is made in Cherbourg with the option to visit the Allied landing areas and the D-Day Museum at Arromanches, overlooking the remains of the famous Mulberry Harbour. On 6th June 2014, the 70th anniversary of D-Day, Discovery will cruise off the coast in Normandy. A ceremony will be held on board to remember all those who lost their life that day and in the tragedy of war.
