Your introduction to Fjordland is Hardangerjord – the Queen of the Fjords. As the fjord carves its way inland, steep sided mountains, reflected in mirror-calm waters, gradually give way to gentler slopes covered in fruit trees. Passengers taking the overland tour to Eidfjord disembark in the picturesque village of Ulvik before Marco Polo cruises to the ‘gateway’ to the Hardangervidda National Park. Optional tours from Eidfjord include Europe’s largest mountain plateau and the spectacular Sysen Dam. Dwarfed by towering mountains at the innermost reaches of Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the mighty Sognefjord, diminutive Flåm is famous as the start of one of the world’s most spectacular railway journeys. The masterpiece of engineering climbs from fjord level to a lofty 2,700 feet through the wild Flåm Valley and an optional excursion on the Flåm Railway promises to be a highlight of your cruise. View the village of Gudvangen at the head of Naeroyfjord as you cruise on this narrowest of fjords surrounded by dramatic mountains. Charming Bergen with its quaint, historic waterfront is a delightful finale. You might wish to visit the home of Edvard Grieg, whose inspiration was the beautiful fjordland scenery.

	Nestled at the head of the peaceful Ulvikfjord and framed by a beautiful backdrop of glorious mountains, the pretty village of Ulvik is just a scattering of attractive houses, a waterfront hotel and white-clapboarded church. The village sits in the heart of one of Norway’s largest fruit growing districts with hillside orchards stretching down to the shores of the fjord. From where ships anchor in the fjord, the village, which is the start of an optional overland excursion highlighting the charms of Hardangerfjord, is picture-postcard perfect. 	Known as the ‘Gateway to the Fjords’, Bergen is Norway’s second largest city. Yet with a population of less than a quarter of a million, it has the feel of a small town. It is beautifully sited against a backdrop of seven mountains and the funicular ride to the summit of Mount Fløien affords wonderful panoramic views of Bergen and Norway’s attractive coastline. Overlooking the harbour the colourful Bryggen wharf is the face of Bergen. The characteristic wooden gabled buildings were once the home and offices of Hanseatic merchants but today house shops selling crafts and traditional souvenirs.

	Surrounded by towering mountains the tiny village of Flåm, with some 500 inhabitants, nestles at the head of Aurlandsfjord, the innermost arm of the mighty Sognefjord. Its popularity as a tourist destination began in the late 19th century with the arrival of steamships carrying English and German passengers including Europe’s royals attracted by the salmon fishing in the Flåm River. Today’s visitors are drawn to Flåm for a chance to ride on one of the world’s steepest and most spectacular railways. A masterpiece of engineering, Flåm Railway twists and turns through the steep-sided Flåm Valley amidst some of Norway’s most breathtaking mountain scenery.
