Sail to Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, home to the ancient Stone Age village of Skara Brae. Enjoy a relaxing day at sea before, reaching Heimaey, in the Westmann Islands which was the scene of an immense volcanic eruption in 1973. On to Reykjavik, lovingly preserved with wooden houses. Nearby are the stunning Gulfoss Falls and the mineral rich bathing waters of the Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik’s steaming geothermal springs. At Isafjördur the sheer basalt cliff of Latrabjarg rises from the sea, home to puffins and other seabirds. And at Akureyri there is an awesome landscape of volcanoes, waterfalls, canyons and geysers to discover. Your final Icelandic stop is the remote town of Seydisfjördur with its nearby Lagarfljot Lake, home to a mythical monster. Dating back to Viking times and located on Borðoy, Klaksvik is the main fishing port on the Faroe Islands where you can discover the Faroe culture and heritage. In Tórshavn, capital of the Faroe Islands, the old part of the town is still made up of small wooden houses with turf roofs. Perched on a hillside overlooking the harbour with quaint flagstone streets, your last call is Lerwick in the beautifully rugged Shetland Islands. A final day at sea as Marco Polo returns to Leith at the end of this wonderful adventure |
